Epistulae
In this series, Prof. Noe looks at the “Epistulae”, a set of letters by the Roman lawyer and politician Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, known as Pliny the Younger. Pliny lived in the 1st century A.D., and is perhaps most famous for his description of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
In the eruption, his uncle, Pliny the Elder, was killed. The “Epistulae” offer a unique look at daily aristocratic life and administration in the early Roman Empire.
