Bringing the Latin and Greek of the Reformation and the classical world to English readers
David C. Noe is a classicist and translator whose work brings Latin and Greek texts of the Reformation and post-Reformation era into clear, readable English, many of them for the first time. He earned his B.A. in Classical Languages and Philosophy from Calvin College (1995) and his Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Iowa (2003), with a dissertation on Cicero and the Stoics. He taught at Patrick Henry College and the University of Iowa before joining the Classics faculty at Calvin, where he served from 2007 to 2021, including three years as department chair.
His translations include Samuel Rutherford’s Arminianism, the first volume of The Works of Samuel Rutherford; John Calvin’s Duae Epistolae, published as God or Baal?; Theodore Beza’s A Clear and Simple Treatise on the Lord’s Supper; Franciscus Junius’s A Treatise on True Theology; and John Arrowsmith’s Plans for Holy War. He has also translated Brenz, Bullinger, Luther, Melanchthon, Musculus, and many others for InterVarsity Press’s Reformation Commentary on Scripture.
In 2015 he founded LatinPerDiem, which offers short, context-rich lessons drawn from 2,300 years of Latin and Greek literature, along with full courses and MasterClasses. He received the Society for Classical Studies Pedagogy Award in 2015. A longtime advocate of spoken Latin, he regularly convenes and teaches at immersive conferences such as the Colloquium Aestivum Latinum and the Biduum Baylorense. He cohosts the Ad Navseam podcast with Dr. Jeff Winkle and serves as a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
