We at LatinPerDiem are pleased to announce MossMethod for Greek, your personal gateway to authentic Ancient Greek. Whether you are a classicist, a student, an enthusiast, or an absolute beginner, learning to read Greek has never been more convenient.
Developed by Dr. David C. Noe and the LatinPerDiem team, this app brings the proven MossMethod directly to your phone or tablet. Since 2015, LatinPerDiem has delivered manageable, context-rich Latin and Greek lessons to a worldwide audience through its YouTube channel (now more than 2,500 free videos). Our philosophy is simple: people learn languages best through real use in context rather than isolated abstractions.
Read Real Greek from Day One
Unlike most contemporary textbooks, which delay real reading and focus first on grammar rules, MossMethod invites you to begin reading simple, connected Greek prose from the very first day. Grammar, vocabulary, syntax, and style emerge naturally as you engage with the text itself. As Charles Melville Moss wrote in his 1893 A First Greek Reader, the goal is “a pleasant and rapid translation.”
Features
- The complete Moss Reader: all 163 stories of graduated difficulty, organized across four modules, progressing smoothly from simple prose to more challenging texts
- Professional audio narration for every story, to build accurate pronunciation, rhythm, and reading confidence
- Facing English translation (Loeb style), so you can check yourself instantly
- Clean and neat layout designed for pleasant, consistent daily reading rather than drills
- Includes ancient Christian creeds in Greek
- Cross-platform: fully optimized for both iOS and Android
A Growing Library
We are actively expanding the app to become your lifelong reading companion. Coming soon: Aesop, foundational texts from Freeman and Lowe’s A Greek Reader for Schools, accessible adaptations of Xenophon, immersive selections from Attic history, and more.
Getting the Most from the App
- Read daily. Even 10–15 minutes a day yields strong results. Work through the stories in order so the gradual increase in difficulty feels natural.
- Use the audio actively. Listen while reading silently, then read aloud alongside the narrator.
- Let the Greek teach you. Notice recurring patterns in vocabulary, forms, and constructions before reaching for reference books.
- Keep pen and paper handy. Jot down new words and constructions, make your own flashcards, and revisit earlier stories. You’ll be delighted to see how much smoother your reading has become.
- Read Moss’s own “Hints for Construing and Translating,” included in the app.
The Perfect Partnership: App + Guided Courses

Who It’s For
MossMethod has helped students of all ages build a deep and lasting foundation in Attic and Koine Greek: homeschoolers, Classical Christian and public-school students, undergraduates, graduate students, seminary candidates, pastors, classical school teachers, and lifelong learners.
About the Translation
The facing English translation was first completed in 2012 by Frederick D. Noe, at age 11, and has recently been lightly revised for readability. Use it as a handy backup when the Greek gets difficult, and for the sheer pleasure of the stories.
About Charles Melville Moss
Charles Melville Moss (1853–1926) taught Greek at Victoria University in Ontario, Illinois Wesleyan University, and for twenty-seven years at the University of Illinois. His A First Greek Reader was first published in 1885 by Allyn & Bacon; the app is based on the 1893 revision.
